Symptoms of jaw problems include:
- Pain on moving the jaw
- Stiffness of the jaw
- Jaw joint clicking
- Tenderness around the jaw joints
- Headaches
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Continuous teeth sensitivity or toothache of no apparent cause
These symptoms are signs of possible damage to the jaw joint. This can be caused by an incorrect unbalanced bite often as a result of missing teeth, particularly back teeth, or habits such as clenching or grinding your teeth (often while asleep).
Nocturnal grinding (bruxism) can be diagnosed in a dental examination where we may see worn tooth surfaces, broken crowns, and fillings or broken teeth.
These problems, once we have diagnosed the cause will be treated.
This may involve replacing missing teeth, careful adjustment of your teeth to ensure that they meet evenly with protective guidance, a mouthguard to wear usually at night if you clench or grind your teeth while asleep.
